When you first get your cockatiel you will want to teach it to hop onto your hand without hesitation to do this:

_______________________________
1.  Begin by talking to your bird. I know it sounds crazy but it can make your cockatiel relaxed and this will help him/her learn that you are not a predator.

2.  After the bird feels comfortable with you talking to it gradually approach the cage every few minutes get closer until you are right next to it.

3.  When your bird sees you next to the cage it may seem a little scared at first but it will get used to you and move on to explore it's cage or surroundings.

4.  Slowly move your hand towards your bird, if it shows any sign of feeling threatened walk away and start over awhile later.

5.  If your bird shows no discomfort with your hand near it try to slide your index finger under it's feet. If the bird trusts you it should simply step right up on your finger.
_______________________________

When this is accomplished you and your bird have now developed a trust, it may not be very strong yet but it will soon be.
